The USMC PFT

The Marine Corps Physical Fitness Test (PFT) is widely considered the most demanding standard fitness test in the U.S. Armed Forces, heavily emphasizing upper body strength and endurance running.

The Events

Marines must complete three events:

  • Upper Body: Maximum pull-ups (dead hang) or push-ups. Choosing push-ups limits the maximum score you can achieve in this category to 70 points instead of 100.
  • Core: Maximum time holding a forearm plank (recently replacing crunches).
  • Cardio: 3-Mile Run. (Rowing is an alternative, but not scored here).

Classification

Scores are categorized into Classes: First Class (235-300), Second Class (200-234), and Third Class (150-199). Failure to meet the minimum score in any single event results in an overall failure, regardless of total points.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are pull-ups preferred over push-ups?

The USMC prioritizes functional pulling strength. If a Marine opts for push-ups, the scoring tables penalize them—the maximum possible score for push-ups is capped at 70, making a First Class PFT significantly harder to achieve.
