The 1-Minute Sit-Up Test
The 1-minute sit-up test is a classic assessment of abdominal and hip flexor muscular endurance. A strong core is vital for athletic performance, posture, and preventing lower back pain.
Test Protocol
To ensure your score is valid against the norms:
- Lie on your back with knees bent at 90 degrees and feet flat on the floor.
- Cross your arms over your chest or place hands gently behind your ears (do not pull on your neck).
- Sit up until your elbows touch your knees, then return until your shoulder blades touch the floor.
- Count how many complete repetitions you can finish in exactly 60 seconds.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why are sit-ups being phased out of military tests?
Many organizations are replacing sit-ups with the forearm plank. High volumes of rapid sit-ups can place excessive compressive force on the lumbar spine, increasing the risk of injury compared to isometric exercises like the plank. These are estimates and may not reflect actual values. Always verify important calculations independently.
