The US Navy Method

The Department of Defense uses a specific tape-measurement method to estimate body fat percentage when military personnel do not meet standard height and weight tables. This method is highly regarded for its convenience and relative accuracy without needing expensive equipment like DEXA scans.

How to Measure Properly

  • Neck: Measure just below the larynx (Adam's apple). Keep the tape level.
  • Waist: For men, measure around the navel. For women, measure at the narrowest point of the waist.
  • Hips (Women Only): Measure at the widest point of the buttocks.

Worked Example (Male)

  1. Height: 180 cm
  2. Waist: 90 cm
  3. Neck: 40 cm
  4. The complex logarithmic formula is applied.
  5. Estimated Body Fat: ~17.5%

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is this method?

The Navy method is generally accurate to within 3-4% of your true body fat percentage. It tends to overestimate body fat in individuals with narrow necks and underestimate it in those with thick necks.
