Ideal Weight Calculator
Calculate your Ideal Body Weight (IBW) based on height and gender using four distinct medical formulas.
The Concept of Ideal Weight
Ideal Body Weight (IBW) formulas were originally developed by doctors and pharmacists to determine accurate medication dosages. While no single formula perfectly describes the "healthiest" weight for a given individual, they provide a medically recognized baseline.
The Four Formulas
Because humans vary so widely in frame size and muscle mass, we calculate an average based on the four most established medical formulas:
- J.D. Robinson Formula (1983)
- D.R. Miller Formula (1983)
- B.J. Devine Formula (1974): The most widely used formula in pharmacy.
- G.J. Hamwi Formula (1964)
Frequently Asked Questions
Why doesn't this account for muscle?
These formulas are based purely on statistical averages of height and weight in healthy populations. They do not account for individuals with extreme muscle mass (like bodybuilders) or unusual bone density. These are estimates and may not reflect actual values. Always verify important calculations independently.
