What is a Fourth Root?

The fourth root of a number x is a value that, when multiplied by itself four times, equals x. For example, the fourth root of 16 is 2 (since 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 = 16).

Even Roots Constraint

Because multiplying any real number by itself an even number of times always results in a positive number, you cannot take the fourth root of a negative number in the real number system. Doing so yields a complex or imaginary number.
