Cylinder Volume & Surface Area
Calculate the cubic volume and total surface area of a right circular cylinder.
Geometry of a Cylinder
A cylinder consists of two parallel circular bases connected by a curved lateral surface. It is one of the most common geometric shapes found in engineering (pipes, tanks, pistons).
Volume and Area Formulas
- Volume: Calculated by finding the area of the circular base and multiplying it by the height.
V = πr²h - Surface Area: Consists of two circular bases (2πr²) plus the rectangular lateral wrap (2πrh).
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this work for slanted cylinders?
Yes for volume! By Cavalieri's principle, the volume of an oblique (slanted) cylinder is the same as a right cylinder with the same vertical height. However, the surface area will be different.
